A substantial antique wooden ship’s wheel with wonderful age, patina and maritime character.
This piece was purchased from the estate of a Hong Kong harbourmaster who served during the war, giving it an especially compelling piece of provenance. The wheel is constructed in wood with turned spokes, a brass-toned central hub and visible pegged / joined construction around the outer ring.
The surface shows the kind of wear you want to see on an old maritime piece — rubbed edges, finish loss, small splits, old repairs and variation in the wood from age and handling. It has a beautifully sculptural presence and works equally well as nautical history, wall art or a statement object in a collected interior.
A wall hanger is already installed on the reverse, so it is ready to display.
I have not independently verified the vessel or harbour service associated with the wheel, so the provenance is being shared as it was passed along with the piece.
